Methodology & Formula Documentation
This page explains how CalculatorDigital calculators work: where formulas come from, how rounding is applied, what assumptions are made, and where the limitations are. We believe formula transparency is part of being a trustworthy calculator platform.
How Formulas Are Selected
Each calculator on CalculatorDigital uses formulas drawn from one or more of the following sources:
- Published academic and textbook mathematics — for general math, statistics, and algebraic operations.
- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines — for EMI amortization, home loan calculations, and interest compounding conventions applicable to Indian banking.
- Income Tax Act provisions and Finance Act notifications — for income tax, HRA, and GST calculators. Tax slabs are updated when official notifications are published.
- World Health Organization (WHO) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) anthropometric guidelines — for BMI, ideal weight, and health-related calculators.
- Published peer-reviewed nutrition research — for calorie, BMR, and TDEE calculators (Mifflin-St Jeor equation and Harris-Benedict equation).
- US Navy circumference method — for body fat percentage estimation.
- Standard actuarial and financial mathematics — for compound interest, amortization schedules, savings projections, and investment return calculations.
Where a formula has multiple published variants, we select the most widely cited version and document the choice on the relevant calculator page.
How Calculations Run
All calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. When you click Calculate:
- Your browser reads the values from the input fields.
- Input validation runs to check for missing or invalid values.
- The formula function receives the validated inputs.
- The formula executes and returns one or more result values.
- Results are formatted and displayed. No data is sent to any server.
This client-side approach means your inputs never leave your device, and results appear instantly without a network round-trip.
Financial Calculator Methodology
EMI / Home Loan Calculators
The standard monthly EMI formula is:EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n − 1)Where P = principal, r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12), n = number of monthly instalments. This formula is consistent with standard banking amortization used by Indian banks.
Assumption: EMI is calculated assuming equal monthly instalments with no prepayment, processing fee, or insurance included unless those fields are explicitly provided.
Compound Interest Calculators
The compound interest formula:A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)Where A = final amount, P = principal, r = annual interest rate, n = compounding frequency, t = time in years.
SIP / Mutual Fund Calculators
SIP returns use the future value of an annuity formula. Important: Mutual fund SIP projections assume a fixed assumed annual return (which you enter). Actual returns vary and are subject to market risk. The calculator is a mathematical projection tool only.
GST Calculator
GST inclusive price and exclusive price calculations use the standard formulas based on the applicable GST rate slab as notified under the Goods and Services Tax Act. Rates shown are based on published official slabs at the time of development and may require updating if slabs change.
Health Calculator Methodology
BMI (Body Mass Index)
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). Classification uses WHO standard categories. BMI is a population screening tool and does not account for muscle mass, body composition, age, or ethnicity differences.
Body Fat Percentage
Uses the US Navy circumference method (neck, waist, and for females, hips). This is an estimation formula derived from population studies and has a margin of error of approximately 3–4 percentage points compared to DEXA scan.
BMR / Calorie (TDEE) Calculators
Uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation as the primary BMR formula, which is considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation for most adults. TDEE is calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity multiplier. These are estimates — individual metabolic rates vary.
Ideal & Healthy Weight
Uses the Hamwi formula and WHO healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) as the basis for ideal weight ranges. Results represent statistical ranges for the general population, not individual clinical targets.
⚠️ All health calculators produce statistical estimates, not medical diagnoses. Consult a licensed healthcare professional for any health or medical decisions.Rounding Rules
- Financial amounts (₹) are rounded to 2 decimal places.
- Percentages are displayed to 2 decimal places.
- Health metrics (BMI, body fat %) are rounded to 1 or 2 decimal places depending on the context.
- Large Indian currency amounts are formatted in lakhs and crores (e.g., ₹25,00,000 = ₹25 Lakh).
- Intermediate calculations use full JavaScript floating-point precision before final rounding.
Rounding may cause minor discrepancies compared to institutional banking systems that use higher-precision mainframe calculations.
Date & Time Calculations
Date difference and age calculators use the local browser date. Age is calculated as the difference between the current date and the birth date. Pregnancy due date uses Naegele's Rule (LMP + 280 days). All date calculations are based on the Gregorian calendar.
Known Limitations
- Tax calculators use published slabs at the time of development. Tax law changes require manual updates.
- Currency conversion uses a static snapshot rate and may not reflect live exchange rates.
- Health formulas are population averages and may not apply accurately to individuals with unusual body composition.
- Investment projections assume constant returns — actual returns fluctuate with market conditions.
- Loan calculations assume fixed interest rates unless variable-rate fields are explicitly provided.
- Rounding differences of 1–2 rupees may occur compared to actual bank amortization statements.
