For sales within the same state, GST is shared equally between Central (CGST) and State (SGST) governments.

GST Calculator India — Complete GST Guide

India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified, multi-stage, destination-based consumption tax that replaced a complex web of central and state levies (excise duty, service tax, VAT, etc.) on 1 July 2017. Understanding GST calculation is essential for business owners, freelancers, and anyone involved in invoicing in India.

What Is GST?

GST is levied at every stage of the supply chain — from manufacturer to retailer — but the tax is ultimately borne only by the final consumer. Registered businesses collect GST on their sales (output tax) and can claim credit for GST paid on their purchases (input tax), paying only the net difference to the government.

GST Rate Slabs in India

GST RateCategory of Goods / Services
0%Essential items: fresh milk, eggs, vegetables, books, unbranded food grains, healthcare services
5%Essentials with some processing: packaged food, medicines, economic hotel stays, small restaurant bills
12%Standard goods: computers, processed foods, business class air travel, construction contracts
18%Most services and consumer goods: electronics, cement, financial services, telecom, IT services
28%Luxury & sin goods: automobiles, tobacco, aerated drinks, luxury hotels, gaming consoles

GST Calculation Formulas

Adding GST to a price (Exclusive → Inclusive):
GST Amount = Net Price × GST Rate / 100
Gross Price = Net Price + GST Amount

Removing GST from a price (Inclusive → Exclusive):
Net Price = Gross Price × 100 / (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Gross Price − Net Price

Example: Gross price ₹11,800, GST @ 18% → Net = 11,800 × 100/118 = ₹10,000 | GST = ₹1,800

CGST vs SGST vs IGST — Which Applies?

GST is split between central and state governments based on whether the transaction is within a state or between states:

  • CGST + SGST (Intrastate): When buyer and seller are in the same state, GST is split 50/50 between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). On an 18% transaction: 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • IGST (Interstate or Import): When goods/services cross state boundaries, the full GST rate is applied as Integrated GST (IGST), collected by the Centre and then distributed to the destination state. On 18% interstate: 18% IGST.
